Bismillah
It was a little windy today but not enough to take shelter. We walked around exploring the forest. We first walked to the woods where we generally sit but it was flooded due to last week's rain. There hasn't been a full sunny day to soak up the water and the ground is still frozen.
As we were walking back, we spotted a pair of mallards in the river. We stood there observing them for a while. We identified the male and the female (we normally call them mommy and daddy bird)

We arrived at an open field surrounded by Evergreen Trees acting as windbreaker.
We set out our tarp and sat down for a snack. We did not read a story today but we learned how to draw birds. Each child received a nature journal in which they can write and draw.

I taught a simple lesson on how to draw a bird that is sitting. The children picked it up fast. Then I asked them if they would like to learn how to draw a bird flying or swimming. They said they want to do both. So, I took turns showing them how to change the body to show what the bird is doing. We then talked about mallards and learned about them. The children were very involved as they had recently sighted the birds. We talked about where they live, what and how they eat, etc.
Fun fact: a male mallard is called a drake and female a duck.
The children were free to draw and colour as they pleased. We talked briefly about habitats while they drew.

Finally, we played a pretend game on being ducks, eagles and whatever bird they wanted to pretend to be showing the 3 motions; sitting, swimming or flying.

Alhamdulillaah it was a great day being active, learning to observe, making friends, and connecting.
